MAGIC RECTANGLES is pleased to present GABRIEL MADAN: Puppet Show (4.19.2015), virtually at John Marshall High School.
A screen-saver-worthy beach scene, green-screened or virtually backgrounded, is disrupted by a stuffed puppet named Goog. Puppy-dog cute-ness is upended by way of Goog’s uncertain questions and expressions.
It’s all familiar, but strange. The puppet and the green-screening effect are almost spectral. Strange because of their ordinary-ness; Goog’s uncanny quality is itself eerie. No platitudes are employed to hide Goog’s suffering. Our sympathies are attracted and repelled. We participate in Goog’s misery; we’re drawn in and feel for Goog and his struggle.
The video will play, pause for a moment, and play a second time.

MAGIC RECTANGLES is pleased to present PEARL C. HSIUNG: Yellowstoner, virtually at John Marshall High School. This is Hsiung’s second presentation with LOCKER. In 2019, LOCKER opened with an inaugural exhibition of Hsiung’s painting installation Wild Radish, Coyote Brush, Baja Sage, Capitolocene in a customary stack of student lockers at Marshall High School.
Yellowstoner is a travelogue, guide, and nature mémoire. The film’s protagonist is found in a setting which summons the imagined landscapes of Hsiung’s early paintings and predicts the abstracted naturalisms of her more recent work.
The protagonist’s body slowly merges with the landscape as an atonal soundtrack takes form. This body disappears, and the rhythms of the track shift to now merge the terrain with the rhythms of the body.
A roiling landscape of abstracted time moves by fits and starts. Forward. In reverse. Time’s passing and flow are both universally understood and perplexing. With Yellowstoner, Hsiung’s geysers give a representation of time moving both in a line and looping back on itself in cycles: anticipating, emerging, building, decaying.

Alex Bag makes the Internet look like a bunch of posers. Before the proliferation of Web 2.0’s self-affected user-generated content, Bag’s production began data-mining digital footprints before we had ever taken a step. Self-effacing, self-inflicted, and self-indulgent, Bag plays back for us evidence of what we’ve said, where we’ve been, what we’ve been thinking, and, primarily, what we’ve seen.
Bag’s Harriet Craig (1998), looks backward and forward. Replaying Joan Crawford’s Harriet, the scheming and controlling ultra-homemaker, Bag’s re-versioning prefigures, in black and white televisual melodrama, the pathetic and the aspirational of social media domestic life.

A boy and his parents have come to the main pier at Orly, the Paris airport, to watch the planes take off. A man, haunted by an image from his childhood, is also on the pier at Orly. It’s the Sunday before the start of World War III.
Right now, let us imagine the cinema-time of the film as a veil over the immediate-time we live through today. Has a reckoning come about too late? What happens next? Call upon the past and the future to save the present.

Feeling tired, anxious, and worried. This isn’t in real time. Even though it seems like it is. There’s a lag. There’s a delay. Things are out of sync. Our brains try to overcome this lack of synchronicity. Where are our releases of dopamine? Where are my oxytocin secretions? I’m getting a rush of cortisol. I can’t see your body language, eye movement, and micro-expressions. I’m missing the nuance. We’re out-of-sync. I can see your smile, but you’re no longer smiling.

MAGIC RECTANGLES is pleased to present 11 – 1 (2010) by Amir Zaki, virtually at John Marshall High School.
The videos that make up Amir Zaki’s 11 – 1 (2010) source images from a selection of Peter Fischli and David Weiss’s Equilibre from 1984. Moving from the arrested analog of photographic images to animated, digitally cinematic moving pictures,11 – 1 renders precariously balanced compositions off-kilter and out-of-whack. These digital constructions unbalance and amuse as they spin, teeter, and quiver.
