LOCKER is pleased to present You Are Someone I Can Tell My Secrets To, an exhibition of new work by Jesse Benson at John Marshall High School.
To refer to Jesse Benson’s image production as realistic or even photorealist can miss or neglect the real-er character of the work and what it does.
What does Benson ask of us by rendering these images consequential?
Benson’s appropriated images of documents and documentation, panels of a digital comic reduced to just a few lines, and yearbook candids all draw on an interest in how images and information recirculate. This new body of work, thoughtful marker renderings, simplified in appearance, but complex in substance – ordered, logical, and weird – Benson’s project for LOCKER offers a periphrastic structure by which to think about how images are encoded with meaning.
Jesse Benson currently lives and works in Oakland, CA. He has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. He has curated and co-curated numerous individual and group exhibitions, including a series of large-scale group exhibitions titled Delusionarium. The fifth installment of Delusionarium opens in April at Night Gallery in Los Angeles.
John Marshall High School is a comprehensive public high school that provides high-quality, creative and rigorous instruction for students in a diverse community.
LOCKER is located at John Marshall High School and is available by appointment. A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, February 13, from 3:15 – 4:30pm.
