LOCKER is pleased to present a line, a new _______________, an exhibition of new work by Juan Capistran at John Marshall High School.
A thought experiment: Please imagine all of Modern and Contemporary art history, or, all of our recent-past, as a topography. Now, imagine your personal history laid out over this topography. Press, push, and force these histories together to make a new cognitive structure.
Juan Capistran uses these new structures as readymade scenarios in order to consider a present reality. Capistran offers a structure, or an idea to decipher, decode, and understand. A redaction and a blank space to fill in; a block and a gap; a wall and an opening. A simple desert dystopia with graphics of an eye, an ear, a bomb, and a lightning bolt. Capistran’s work offers a scenario to survey, redefine, and translate overlapping and multiple readings of the past and the present.
Juan Capistrán lives and works in Los Angeles. A Mexican-born artist who grew up in a predominantly African American neighborhood in Los Angeles, Capistrán has exhibited widely in solo and group presentations. He was featured in the Hammer Museum’s Made in LA 2014, FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art 2018, and COLA 2019 for which he was awarded a recipient of a 2019 City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship for visual arts.
John Marshall High School is a comprehensive public high school that provides high-quality, creative and rigorous instruction for students in a diverse community.
LOCKER is located at John Marshall High School and is available by appointment. A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, December 5, 3:15 – 4:30pm.
