LOCKER is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Pearl C. Hsiung at John Marshall High School.
Hsiung’s painting Wild Radish, Coyote Brush, Baja Sage, Capitolocene images both vertical and horizontal strata in reference to the layering vegetation of the California landscape within a familiar and customary stack of three student lockers at Marshall High School. Muted tones of olive greens and greys, purples, orange, and yellow are divided by a vertical strip of hot pink, hot yellow, and hot orange anchored by an institutional blue-grey matching the lockers themselves. The painting’s dimensionality continues Hsiung’s thoughtful consideration of landscape under pressure – the active forces of growth and decay. In a similar vein, Capitolocene references a geological time where, in Hsiung’s painting, the landscape’s productive potential serves the capitalist in extractive and speculative terrains.
Pearl C. Hsiung was born in Taichung, Taiwan. She lives and works in Los Angeles. She has exhibited in solo shows in Los Angeles, London and Kunming, China and group exhibits such as The Beyond; Georgia O’Keeffe and Contemporary Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art and Crystal Bridges Museum of Art; and Made in L.A. 2012 at the Hammer Museum. Her work has been commissioned for a large-scale tile mosaic mural for a new Metro Station at 2nd Ave./Hope St. station, opening in downtown Los Angeles in 2021.
